Child dental care

Good oral care begins before a baby's first tooth
Начало

Babies are born with all their teeth, but they cannot be seen, because they are hidden in the gums and start to break through around 6 months of age. It is important to start good oral care very early. Oral hygiene is crucial even before the first tooth of the baby comes in.

A child's dental care really starts with a healthy pregnancy. Baby teeth begin to form before birth. It is important to eat balanced and nutritious diet and provide an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals when you’re pregnant. Pregnant women also should undergo complete prophylactic dental check-up and treat any cavities or gum problems.

Children usually have all their primary (baby) teeth by the age of 3. This set of teeth starts falling around age 6 to make place for permanent adult teeth. Gaps between baby teeth are usually normal, because they make room for the permanent set of teeth.

• Start practicing good oral care before the first tooth comes in.
• Schedule the first dental appointment before the first birthday.
• Provide regular dental check-ups twice a year starting at the age of 3.
• Make sure your kids brush at least twice a day with suitable age-correct fluoride toothpaste. • Begin flossing as soon as two teeth touch.
• Encourage your children to limit sugary and sticky foods and drinks. This helps a great deal in preventing tooth decay.

Even babies can develop tooth decay. To prevent that parents should practice good feeding habits.

Bottle Tooth Decay

Bottle Tooth Decay is a serious condition that can occur if babies drink milk, formula or juice out of a bottle over a prolonged period of time. Sugars from juice or milk remain on the baby's teeth and/or gums for hours overnight. This could eat away at the enamel. The condition is known as “bottle mouth”.

Signs

Pocked, pitted or discolored front teeth are easily visible signs of “bottle mouth”.

To avoid it a parent can take the bottle away after the baby is done drinking, do not put the baby in bed with a bottle and provide good care.

How to keep children's teeth healthy

0–2 years

• Wipe gums with a soft washcloth right after feeding. This practice helps get rid of plaque, which is the main reason for tooth decay and cavities.
• Brush kids’ teeth twice a day. Use water and a soft-bristle toothbrush.

3-5 Years

• Start using fluoride toothpaste at age 3, but use only very small (pea-sized) amount. Also, make sure the child spits it all out right after brushing.
• Try to break thumb-sucking and pacifier habits by the age of 4.
• Schedule dentist appointments every 6 months.

6–9 years

• Until children are able to practice proper oral health habits alone, parents should help their child brush and floss twice a day.
• Begin flossing (as soon as teeth touch).

10–12 years

• Pay attention to back teeth, they may have more plaque that remains hidden.

13+ years

• Encourage kid who wear braces to brush after each meal and floss thoroughly.
